Small iconic family-run restaurant located in the heart of the venetian harbor. Food was fresh and authentic. We also had a chat with the owner Maria about the history of the restaurant. What a lovely woman. The restaurant is kids friendly. Do call ahead to make a reservation as they only have a few tables. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €15–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

This is without a doubt the most special restaurant I have ever visited. From the moment we walked in, we felt a warmth and hospitality that is truly rare to experience. The person who left the biggest impression on us was the owner, Maria. She is an incredibly kind, warm, and genuine woman who made us feel completely at home. Even though the restaurant was full of guests, she took the time to share the story of her family’s tradition and the history of this taverna. We were deeply moved by her story, and you can feel its history in every corner, especially through the photographs on the walls that reflect the love, dedication, and family values on which this beautiful taverna was built—values that Maria continues to preserve with great pride to this day. Listening to her speak about what this place means to her gave me goosebumps more than once. Maria radiates kindness, warmth, and sincerity. It is clear that she does her work with all her heart, and people like her are the reason you cannot wait to come back. The food was absolutely phenomenal! I have to especially mention the calamari—they were the most delicious I have ever had in my life. At the end of the evening, Maria surprised us by gifting us a bottle of wine produced by her family. It was such a thoughtful and generous gesture that we will always remember. We would like to thank her once again and say that the wine was absolutely excellent. We can’t wait for the opportunity to visit this wonderful taverna again. It is a place made special not only by its outstanding food, but also by Maria, whose passion, dedication, and genuine care make the experience truly unforgettable. We had a wonderful meal at Taverna Knossos and were met warmly by Maria and her team. The restaurant has a beautiful view across the harbour, such a perfect setting. I first visited this restaurant in 1987 and it's run by the same family and still serves delicious traditional Greek food, specialising in seafood. We called in late afternoon to reserve a table and were glad we had, as it is very popular and only has a few tables. I'm sure there are other nice places to eat in Rethymno but if you're looking for traditional Greek food and hospitality with the best views, this place can't be beaten.
