After a quick clean up at our villa, we mounted our bikes again and rode a short distance in the dark to dinner at Kōge. It’s hard to put in words what a special meal we had. I tried my best in Japanese to express my gratitude for the lovely meal, but I’m sure I fell short. What we had is known as Japanese kaiseki ryōri. From the moment we entered, we were treated with the utmost care and service. This is authentic Japanese haute cuisine and has been around since the 1500s. Grabbing from a description I found online, “Kaiseki is a traditional, multi-course Japanese haute cuisine that emphasizes seasonal ingredients, artistic presentation, and a balance of flavors and textures. It is considered a refined and elegant dining experience, where each dish is thoughtfully prepared and presented on carefully selected tableware to create a feast for both the eyes and the palate.” There is always a raw dish, steamed dish, broiled dish, fried dish, pickles/rice/miso soup, and dessert. Our amazing chef Kouge San, aided by his nephew, presented some of the most refined and delicious dishes I’ve ever had. We had a private dining room, but enjoyed their company each course as they explained in detail what we were having. And they were both very surprised I speak Japanese, so they stayed longer and we got to know one another. It was an experience that we will never forget. I really hope to get back here again one day.
