In order to get closer, my big brother and I recently inaugurated a new weekend tradition: discovering what Montreal has to offer that is beautiful, good and inexpensive. This week, our choice fell on a Mexican restaurant that ticks all the criteria, Talamera on Fairmount Avenue. It has been offering Montrealers Mexican delights for over 10 years and recently underwent a rejuvenation treatment. We now find in the narrow space of around sixteen seats a pleasant and joyful mix of colors, combining pastel with apricot on a background sometimes white, sometimes pale beige. Abstract art is highlighted with three large esoteric window paintings. The measure of the layout inspires confidence and builds anticipation of a great meal. Quite a contrast with the exterior which remained, deliberately or not, completely black and somewhat faded. My dining companion having had a little problem, I quietly explore the menu and ask the employee behind the counter to put together a nice sampling of the establishment's specialties. There are of course the tamales, of which we will remember the one with chicken in green sauce and the one with cheese and jalapeno. Then there are the “baja” tacos to take fried for more pleasure. Finally, there are the chilaquiles with upside-down egg, where the initially crispy tortillas succumb to a generous spicy red sauce. Three beautiful, tasty and textured plates offering a consistent meal for $25 per person after taxes. As a result, Talamera excels in the balance between portion, price and flavors, all in a welcoming and soothing environment. Bottle of horchata in hand, I even came to escape into a gentle abstraction and I would have remained in this state of peace of mind for a few more minutes, had it not been for the occurrence of another glitch which forced us to end our stay. In short, we hit the nail on the head with this Mexican who gave us a good, fraternal quality time. Vegetarian options: Yes! Go to section 5 “vegetarian” Parking: Free parking on avenue de l'esplanade, but not on Fairmount (except Sunday before 1 p.m.) Kid-friendliness: Yes! Menu offering quesadillas for children Wheelchair accessibility: Anyway! A step and a door to go through. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: CA$20–30 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Recommended dishes: Taco Aux Crevettes Parking space: Somewhat difficult to find parking Parking options: Free street parking, Paid street parking

I had forgotten that I had even eaten here because it had been so long! But man am I happy I got to come back! La tamalera is just doing things right! When you walk in the restaurant is quite small but they don't let that stop them from setting up a small shop where you can pick up a few items like Mexican candies, hot sauces action figures and more. Once you move past that you get to order so many amazing options from the menu! I started with a tortilla soup, esquites and was already in heaven. For mains we had gotten shrimp tacos (which came in the option of having the battered or grilled) and of course a tamales plate with two different options. Each dish was amazingly tasty and brought so many different flavours. Having recently gotten back from Mexico this was definitely replicating original flavours! You gotta stop in and give yourself the gift of they're menu!
