Fantastic little place with a tasty menu for all to enjoy! We stumbled on this while taking a stroll down town, and it was really great. I recommend the appetizers of you're splitting with your better half, plus you need to try the beer flight!
Damn good sushi. They take a while for pickup, so factor that in.
Laughing Monk Cafe met my expectations, but didn't exceed them. The restaurant is pretty small so I'd recommend reservations. The interior is pretty unassuming, and it seems like a lot of people order take out from here. We were seated about 5 minutes after coming in with a reservation, and there were only two girls working up front. For a place that charges upwards of $9 for a single nigiri, I did expect a better ambiance, but I didn't let that influence my opinion of the food. For the two of us, we ordered a soup, 2 of the special nigiris each, and a sampler nigiri as well as a roll. The soup was delicious (not Tom Yum but the one under it on the menu) and had pieces of ginger in it that added great flavor. The special nigiri had high quality fish, were beautiful, but I would definitely recommend getting them as an addition to your meal rather than basing your meal on them, as the value isn't great (in terms of quantity not quality). For the nigiri sampler, all of the fish was super fresh and there was a variety. The roll, which had both shrimp tempura and soft shell crab, didn't impress me that much...it was delicious but both tempuras in the roll made it hard to taste the difference of ingredients, kind of just a lot for one bite, although the taste was good. For dessert, we went with the black sesame panna cotta and the coconut ice cream. The coconut ice cream was by far our favorite dish- I would come back just to taste the creamy fresh coconut ice cream with delicious garnishes of fresh coconut flakes and pieces of sticky rice. At the end of our meal, around 9:30, (our reservation was for 8:30 and we didn't eat until maybe 9), the servers up front turned the lights on (as they were dimmed), signaling for us to leave. I didn't appreciate that, as they would have been quicker with the check, or at least should have told us they'd be closing soon and not just flashing the lights a few times before telling us. There is definitely room for improvement in terms of the other touches, but the quality of the fish and creativity of the dishes make up for all of that. Not sure if I would return, since for $50 each (without drinks) we could have gone to a much nicer restaurant and not just somewhere with good food and no ambiance....however, I would return for take out or to try the Thai dishes!
