Having spent most of my life living in Portsmouth and my formative years in and around Fawcett Road/Albert Road, I was surprised when I realised I had never actually been to the Lawrence Arms.My wife and I decided to pop down for a lunchtime pint on a Saturday afternoon. As with most pubs in the area, the pre-match crowd was in before a home game, but it wasn’t too crowded with a few seats available inside. The first thing to stun me was the incredible selection of lagers, beers and ales to delight the senses, not to mention the ciders on offer as part of a festival they were hosting. Needless to say, I was happy with the Beavertown offerings! After a couple of drinks, we decided to try one of their toasted sandwiches… This is where the Lawrence Arms elevates itself beyond a nice pub with lovely & friendly staff, and instantly becomes one of Southsea’s hidden gems!I had seen the landlord walking back and forth from the kitchen area with prepackaged sandwiches. I had assumed that these were from a local deli or caterer, but when speaking to the landlady of this fine establishment, I was informed that her husband makes all the sandwiches from scratch, even to the point of basting, curing and cooking his own meats! This is a serious operation!I will, without a doubt be back to this incredible pub to soak up the atmosphere, beers and toasties again! Might even try a Sunday roast next time.
