I rarely start my lunchtime wanderings from outside the immediate city centre, so even on a good day my range is limited by time and shoe leather. When my start point was on the southside, I took the opportunity to venture further down Causewayside where I found Layzee Latte. The place is definitely open to being called a rough diamond. The interior was untidy and a bit grubby around the edges, but it gave assurances of lots of homemade stuff. The friendly counter man confirmed that the soup, and savoury and sweet baked goods were all made in-house. This sounded promising.

Walking into town through Blackford can take you many different routes. Right up through the Grange and Marchmont, or heading through Newington. Usually I choose the Newington route, trudging my way up Causewayside. Usually I end up getting something to eat, Layzee Latte is perhaps the best location for it, being halfway between the Meadows and the Kings Buildings.
This is not the kind of place that you can expect an opulent dining experience from, but rather one that provides you with a hearty meal for a decent price - something which can never be sniffed at.
The service is quick and cheerful, the food is cheap and cheerful. A decent place to grab a quick bite to takeaway as you hurry to town, or if you are a student at Edinburgh Uni, the Kings Buildings.
