This was my first experience with Lefty's Fried Rice. I placed online order #1250262576 at 5:57 p.m. At 6:11 p.m., I received a text message indicating that my order would be ready at 6:55 p.m. I arrived at approximately 7:00 p.m., but did not receive my food until around 8:04 p.m. My order included 2 Dragon Party wings, 3 boxes of rice, 1 combo plate, 2 spring rolls, and 8 sodas. Although the store closed at 8:00 p.m., there were still seven customers waiting when closing time arrived. Some were waiting for their food, while I was waiting for a refund because the eight sodas I ordered were out of stock. During my entire wait, I could hear continuous activity in the kitchen, including cooking and staff communicating about orders. It was evident that the kitchen staff were working; however, the primary issues appeared to be related to timing, organization, communication, and front-counter support. I observed two employees who worked diligently throughout the evening. One young man with locs braided back, wearing a gray and black hoodie, greeted customers, swept the floor, took orders, monitored the entrance, and addressed concerns from customers frustrated by the delays. He continued working after closing. A young woman with long braids and a lip piercing was also consistently attentive and professional. She took orders, answered phone calls, assisted customers, checked on order statuses with the kitchen, and continued bagging food after closing. She was apologetic regarding both the inventory issue and the extended wait time. She informed me that the refund for the unavailable sodas would be credited back to my card. Because the sodas were unavailable, I chose to remain until I could confirm the refund had been processed. I ultimately received the refund and left at approximately 8:20 p.m. The issues I experienced were not the result of these two employees. They appeared to be doing their best under challenging circumstances. The primary concerns were the excessive wait time, lack of communication, and inconsistent customer service. Another employee wearing a black Sublime T-shirt frequently kept her back turned to customers and did not appear to provide the same level of support to her coworkers. While she was friendly and engaged with two male customers, her responses to other customers requesting sweet-and-sour sauce or additional condiments were repeatedly limited to, “They charge for that.” The manner in which these responses were delivered came across as dismissive and unhelpful. That same employee left at approximately 8:09 p.m., while the young man monitoring the entrance and the young woman bagging orders continued assisting customers after closing. When I finally arrived home and tried the food, I found it comparable to offerings from another rice restaurant in North County. In my opinion, the quality did not justify the extended wait. The employees who were actively assisting customers and managing operations deserve recognition for their efforts. However, the overall operation would benefit from significant improvements in efficiency, communication, and customer service. As a first-time customer, this experience left a lasting impression, unfortunately not a positive one.
