The atmosphere of the small restaurant is personal and pleasant with comfortable seating options and lighting dimmed but adjusted according to customer wishes.
My wife and I were only looking for a light meal and ordered Seafood 3 Ways and my son ordered Lema's Extreme Grill (normally a breakfast/lunch menu item). The chef agreed to produce my son's special request and my son was very impressed with the result. His steak, sausage and bacon were each cooked to bring out their best qualities and the sauces were delicious. These were accompanied by mushrooms and potato hash cubes. I wasn't looking too hard at his plate by this time. I was too busy being amazed by the presentation of our seafood meal.
Our seafood meal was, again, delicious. The three meals were presented - this was no slap-it-on-the-plate. I see why others have called this fine dining for Byford. It truly is. The raw oysters were still beautifully chilled and the accompanying sauce made them so much better. The prawns sat in a small bowl of a seafood flavoured sauce like nothing we had tasted before - seafoodie but not too much so. Lovely. The scallop was tender and moist. The porkbelly sample that came at one end of the rectangular platter had the scallop on top with a nice apple sauce drizzled over it, with a pea sauce under the pork belly. There was also a small serve of delicately flavoured rice and a small square of tenderly cooked beef - also with it's own sauce. Brilliant meal.
Then came the deserts - sticky date pudding and mango sorbet. The two contrasting tastes worked so well together. My son had the chocolate brownie and icecream - tasty chocolate and raspberry sauce. The deserts were also winners in the effort that went into their presentation.
We'll be back.
This time around we were rather disappointed! We ordered the same meals, which seemed a lot smaller, and the presentation was very unattractive. It was just slapped on the plate. We received no hash browns that the menu stated we would get, instead we got an unseasoned mixed of cubed potatoes and spinach. If there are no hash browns left, let your customers know!!!
Also, my sons pancakes appeared to have been reheated in the microwave...we had a clear view into the kitchen and saw it! Microwaves do not belong in cafe's restaurants!!! Gordon Ramsey would have a field day in that kitchen by the way!
Don't think we will be back in a hurry.
