.Los del Manicomio - The Folks from the Lunatic Asylum.Not the most common type of name for a bar! You have to know and understand Estepona to understand the reason why this bar, opened mid 2016, has this weird name.In the 19th century at the corner of the Calle Real and the little pedestrianised street (Calle Carmen Sevilla) that leads to the lovely Plaza de las Flores, there was a Lunatic Asylum. Just 100 metres down the road from this newly-established bar. When such places were deemed unacceptable, it was replaced by shops,flats, and a bar called the Cafeteria Central. But all locals always called the bar "El Manicomio" - the Lunatic Asylum. They called it that for generations. Fast forward to spring 2016. A company buys the whole block in which the Cafeteria Central is situated, and knocks it down, leaving an unsightly gap surrounded by pretty pictures of the new Hotel Maravilla that they are going to build. The folk who were running and working in the Cafeteria Central (aka El Manicomio) took over the building 100 meters away, opened a new bar-cafeteria, and called it . . . Los del Manicomio.So now you have local knowledge, including knowing that this is an excellent place for breakfast, lunch, snacks at all times. Excellent tapas, and great fried fish of all sorts. Boquerones fritos, Calamares a la Romana and Gambas al ajillo. There you have a tapas meal for two - just order that.And look out for the Hotel Maravilla being built and ready. It is in a marvellous location - right in the Plaza de las Flores - the heart and soul of Estepona - and 2 minutes from the beach. The architect's drawings show it as a "maravilla " - a marvel!.
