Not surprising this went under. Was a great restaurant back in the day, but the final few years it went down the tubes. I heard the original management sold it and the people who took it over didn't do a good job with the place. Shame, had some good memories here.

Food is as delicious as the drinks are heavy. Make sure you take a cab because both your stomach & liver will meet their match.

You have to respect any business that has been around for 40+ years with a loyal clientele.  Lun Wah Restaurant & Tiki Bar is one such business.  Located in an old strip mall in Roselle, it would be very easy to drive past this on your way somewhere else, but out of the corner of your eye the word "Polynesian" might just grab you or if you are closer, some of the very kitschy decor.  I use the word "kitsch" with pure affection as Lun Wah knows what it is and does not pretend to be anything else. As you walk through the door, you instantly realize you're not in Kansas anymore.  To the right is a genuine Tiki bar with a dining area behind that.  In the middle is a path to the bathrooms which includes a waterfall fountain on the wall complete with tiny tchotchkes decorating the fountain.  A bit to the left is the cashier and host station where you can purchase a variety of Tiki glasses, Chinese style bowls and even T-shirts!   Then you enter the main dining area and it is, in a word: Amazing.  Lining the walls are booths with wood along the walls, faux grass covering on top, faux statues over others and lighting fixtures made from *clamshells*.  The furniture looks like it could have been around in the 70's or 80's, it doesn't matter, it is like stepping into another world.  The beauty of the decor is that it is not say, Rainforest Cafe which is a large corporation creating a carefully constructed layout planned in a marketing boardroom.  Instead, at some point in history this decor was *genuinely* in fashion and this place went with it - it just never changed! All that said, I do not want to make it sound like this place is grungy or dirty.  My understanding is that new owners took over the establishment a few years ago, and they made some minor improvements including the addition of a flat screen TV in the dining area.  Everything was very clean.  No dust or cobwebs.  Indeed, there was a very steady flow of customers (who seemed to know the waitstaff) so this place sees a fair amount of action, which was great to see. Okay, but what about the food?  Well, this place leans much more towards Cantonese food than Polynesian.  You won't find Panipopo or Koelepalau here.  However, some dishes do use fruit in them with coconut as a sweetener, so there is some Polynesian influence, but do not expect anything amazingly exotic here (and frankly, that's okay). When you sit down, a small dish of duck sauce and another of mustard along with fried wonton noodles is dropped in front of you.  Not a lot of Chinese places do this anymore in this area, so it was a nice throwback that I appreciated.   As you crunch on the wontons you can read the menu.  I wound up getting three dishes to try: VELVET CHICKEN CORN SOUP (with an egg) For those unfamiliar, basically think egg drop soup with chicken chunks and corn in it.  I was very happy with the flavor and texture of this soup (it thins as it cools, so don't wait too long to enjoy it).  Pro-top: add a bit of the mustard for a fun kick! SINGAPORE RICE NOODLES (with roast pork, shrimp, carrots, peppers and onions) This is a dish that is a staple of many restaurants in Manhattan's Chinatown, but it is becoming more difficult to find it done well.  I was very happy to find that this version was done just right.  The noodles were cooked just right with a good bite (and not mushy).  The vegetables were just right as well, not soggy or too crunchy.  The flavor was spot on, with the curry bringing mild but tasty heat.  I was very happy with this dish. LUN WAH WOR GAI (Chicken chunks with shrimp, roast pork and vegetables) This dish is served with rice and you get *plenty* of food.  I wound up taking most of this to go.  The vegetables were nice and firm and the chicken was cooked well.  The sauce was not your typical "garlic brown sauce" you get in Chinese take-out places.  It was lighter and sweeter.  I probably wouldn't rush to get this dish again (partly because there are other dishes I want to try). This was my first time at Lun Wah but I have to say they have gained my affection in a unique way that I do not think any other business in the area can.  I will definitely be back to try out some of their other dishes.
