A Hidden Gem Worth Finding I had Magersari on my must-visit list since last year — and finally made it in 2025. No signboard, no flashy banners, nothing to tell you this spot serves some of the best, most soulful food in Bali. But once you find it… wow. It’s a humble place, but the flavors? Anything but simple. I had white rice with empal goreng basah (tender, juicy fried beef), spicy sambal, and a side of clear spiced soup with cabbage and glass noodles (soun). Everything was comforting, nostalgic, and absolutely delicious. The empal was consistently tender on both my visits (yes, I came back the next day — it was that good!). Sweet and savory, soaked in Javanese spices and palm sugar — it instantly reminded me of my late mother’s cooking. Truly sentimental food, cooked with care and soul. Now let’s talk about the soup. Just soun, shredded cabbage, and fried shallots in a light, clear broth — but the taste was surprisingly deep. I could pick up hints of cardamom, white pepper, ginger, and a subtle warmth from nutmeg (pala). A perfect match with the rich empal — one bite of rice, one sip of soup… addicting! They also serve fried paru (beef lung) and otak (cow brain). This time, we did try the otak goreng — lightly coated in egg and pan-fried. The flavor was subtle and clean, with no unpleasant aftertaste. Not the star of the meal, but a nice traditional touch done right. All in all, Magersari is one of the OG halal food spots in Bali — unassuming, heartwarming, and consistently excellent. Great job.
