This is the place, where if you sit outside and are not otherwise engaged in a conversation or with your earbuds up, you'll notice that roughly every third couple or group walking by there's that one person who interrupts and says "THIS is the place..." and goes off on their own glowing review as they walk away. I'm not joking. You can try it yourself. All you need is about 20 minutes sitting outside, being aware of your surroundings as people walk on by, as you savor what I consider to be the best pain au chocolat (and croissants) I've had outside of France. Proust’s Swann had his madeleine in Combray, I had my pain au chocolat at Maison Alyzée. This is, mind you, on Burlingame Avenue, where there are at least five other serious bakeries within less than a two block radius. Why do I have the feeling their storefronts aren't eliciting the same type of responses from passersby? I could see for myself, but I don't think they'd appreciate me sitting outside their respective bakeries enjoying a pain au chocolat and a latte from Maison Alyzée. Among the many things COVID changed, it's interesting it established an outdoor cafe culture in the U.S. that I hadn't seen much outside of France. Maison Alyzée is just taking full advantage of that by not only importing the expertise of French pastry baking but the crucial ingredients themselves that can’t be substituted locally to pull off what has become my favorite breakfast over the past few months. Also, amazing $5 baguettes, $1 chouquettes, and, yes, the $10 mille-feuille is well worth it at a penny per sheet.
