This was a take out order of Fried Rice combination and kung pao chicken. I was hoping that the fried rice came with everything it said it had on the menu but it had little chicken, no beef and cut up pieces of shrimp. The taste was very bland and of burn rice and it was in clumps. The kung pao chicken was just ok again very bland and lacking in vegetables. I go to Chinese restaurants because I know they have strong flavor but I didn't get it with this restaurant. Maybe some of their specialties dishes have better flavor. TL;DR: food was good if you know how to order Chinese food, but the waitress was worse than bad, even hostile. Takeout only, dine in if you want to get treated with an attitude. If I were rating the food alone, Mala House would get 5 stars. The Big Plate Stew Chicken and the Mala dry pot cauliflower & pork belly were both fantastic. They came out in a reasonable timeframe and the kitchen clearly knows what they are doing. However, the waitress serving us was the worst I have ever experienced. From the moment we walked in at 5:45 PM, she seemed angry that we were there, walking to a table without even speaking to us. We were rushed to order, and the interaction over the menu was bizarre. When we requested the stew, she repeatedly tried to talk us out of it, complaining it would take 20 minutes and stating she "can sometimes get it out in 10, but the chicken won't be cooked in such a short time." If the kitchen had a cutoff time, she should have just said so instead of passive-aggressively threatening us with raw chicken. When our dishes were brought out, she practically threw them on the edge of the table and walked away. She even threw the check on our table while we were still eating. When my wife politely asked for a to-go box for our leftover rice, the server gave her a completely unjustified annoyed look. Because of the blatantly hostile attitude, I left a $1 tip. The server then confronted me to argue about it, claiming "it's late" and complaining that she had to carry the food from the kitchen to our table, finishing it off with a highly sarcastic "God bless you." We left at 6:30 PM, the restaurant was still working on other takeout orders, and carrying food is the definition of a server's job. Working a federal holiday is no excuse to force your miserable attitude onto your customers. Great food, but the owners need to seriously address that waitress. Stick to takeout.
