Walked in close to closing time not knowing what to expect and they welcomed us like we'd booked weeks in advance. Pretty sure it's a family operation — an older couple and their daughter if I had to guess, that kind of warmth you only get from a place with real skin in the game. First proper sake experience of the trip and let's just say I got carried away. The food was wonderful, everything felt home cooked and considered. We were the last ones there and they showed no signs of wanting us gone. When we finally left she came outside to see us off and told us to be safe — and I genuinely had to take a moment. That's just who these people are. One of my favourite meals of the entire trip. Price per person: ¥1–1,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

We are staying in ito for a couple of nights and arrived before we could check in. I decided to try something local for lunch and mangetsu caught my attention. A little local shop ticked away in a corner near the river. Our walk along the river to mangetsu was very pleasant. Upon entry, it feels like you are walking into someone's home and the kitchen is right there. We say at the counter and could see all the work that went into making out lunch. We had the katsudon and omelette river to share. The omelette river is basically tomato sauce rice inside an omelette blanket. Rice cooked with diced onions and some ham pieces. Simple dish. The katsudon was prepped fresh. The meat was cut, pounded, breaded and fried right in front of me. It is like watching your parent prepare lunch. So cool. Served over rice, a small side dish and a bowl of miso soup. All the dishes tasted like home cooked food. If you are a foreigner, prepare to use Google translate's camera feature. If you want to eat touristy food, this is not for you either. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
