Rustic, flavourful traditional Greek food Maria really knows what she is doing! Step inside and take a look at what she has cooking in her pots. Choose from whatever is still available, because the food sells out quickly. Most of her customers are locals. We have had lunch at Maria’s twice. On our first visit, stuffed peppers and moussaka were all that remained. The stuffed peppers were the best I have had in Greece—beautifully seasoned and full of flavour. The moussaka was also excellent. On our second visit, we had Greek salad and lamb stew. The salad was enormous, and the lamb had been slow-cooked until wonderfully tender. Maria stays open only as long as there is food left, so it is best to go there for lunch. Maria’s is a small quaint restaurant in Rethymno making home cooked meals that are very tasty/delicious. They have indoor and outdoor dining . When you arrive the first time, the chef lets you see in the kitchen the pots with the daily specials, when they’re sold out that option is removed from the day’s meal menu. We had the beans in tomato sauce, the stuffed peppers, the house wine and bread. Everything was really good and delicious, everyone in the restaurant was very nice and attentive. It’s not fancy eating but it’s what good food should be, food for the soul. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: €10–15 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4
