A wonderful local izakaya experience in Kyoto. The atmosphere was warm, authentic and incredibly welcoming, making us feel like we had discovered a place where locals genuinely enjoy spending their evenings. Every dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor, with a menu that clearly reflects the seasonality of the ingredients. We especially appreciated the care taken in selecting and presenting seasonal specialties, which made the meal feel unique and connected to Kyoto's culinary traditions. What truly elevated the experience was the kindness and professionalism of the staff. Despite the language barrier, everyone was attentive, friendly and eager to make us feel comfortable throughout the evening. When I was traveling alone, I searched for good Japanese sake and came across Matamoya. I went there and it was a great decision! ! Entered the store as soon as it opened. There's also a counter, so it's perfect for drinking alone. Although the owner is only in his mid-30s, he manages the restaurant by himself, which can accommodate about 20 people. There was only one other customer, so we enjoyed our drinks and food while chatting with the owner about sake. There are about 30 types of sake, ranging from local Kyoto sake to all over Japan. If the meal was available, they would adjust the amount for each person. Seared mackerel, grilled buds, steamed mackerel with ponzu sauce, and miso-marinated cheese. All of them went well with sake and I was very satisfied ^ ^ Even though the bill is located in Pontocho, It was a pocket-friendly cost performance. This is a shop that I would definitely like to visit when I come to Kyoto again
