At Matcha En, visitors can have perfectly cooked taiyaki and good strawberry shortcake. Do not go away without eating tasty crepe cakes, ice cream and chocolate custard. Most likely, you'll come back to this place later to order delicious matcha or great matcha latte.

I stopped by Matcha En near the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus and had a really good experience overall. (The other location is in Chicago’s Chinatown.) The space has a calm and inviting atmosphere, with soft lighting, instrumental music, and decor like a faux plant wall that adds to the relaxed vibe. There are plenty of seating options, including booths and tables, making it easy to sit and enjoy your dessert. It wasn’t busy when I visited in the late afternoon, so there was no wait to order or receive food. Ordering was simple with self-service kiosks (there were two available), and I appreciated being able to see pictures of the menu items. There’s also the option to order with a staff member. The menu itself offers a wide variety of desserts—almost a bit overwhelming, but great if you like having lots of options. I ordered the half ube/matcha soft serve (with the $1 upgrade), which came out to $9.50 after tax. The ube soft serve was probably one of the best I’ve had—rich in flavor and very smooth. The matcha was also good and complemented it well. One small note: it wasn’t actually swirled—the ube was dispensed first with the matcha layered on top, which I didn’t prefer but still good. It also melts pretty quickly, so it’s best to enjoy it right away. The main drawback for me was the pricing. Even before tax, $8.50 for the size felt a bit steep, especially for the portion. That said, the flavors were definitely on point, which helped justify it somewhat. The staff member I interacted with was friendly, which added to the positive experience. Location-wise, it’s in a busy campus area surrounded by other restaurants, especially Asian eateries. It’s very convenient if you’re already nearby, though parking can be a bit tricky, which is expected for this area. There is some street parking available, and it’s very walkable. Overall, this is a great dessert spot with high-quality flavors and a relaxing environment. While the pricing may give me pause, I’d still consider coming back.
