This place is hostile toward foreigners. I understand some Japanese, and during our visit the owner spoke freely in Japanese to other Japanese customers while making negative comments about us, saying our way of ordering was “weird” and that we were “not reading the room.” The Umeshu Oolong I ordered was clearly diluted with water only and had no oolong flavor. He badmouthed to the other customers saying I was too drunk to tell — which was not true. We were unexpectedly upcharged 600 yen at the end, with the explanation that menu prices did not include tax. During the meal, he and the other Japanese customers also discussed something including the word 「詐欺」(fraud/scam), which added to the discomfort. He then went on a rant about not knowing where “all these foreigners” come from, and said that all he can do is “smile as part of the service.” None of this was said to us directly — it was said about us, in Japanese, while we were sitting there. I’m introverted, and with the language barrier, I didn’t know how to address this in the moment. Quietly minding your own business should not result in being mocked or talked down to. This place seems tolerable only if you are either a local-level Japanese speaker who can go along with his chatting, or a foreigner who cannot understand what he is saying at all. I made a reservation and they did not honor it. We showed up 5 mins before and they told us there was no reservation and asked us to leave. This may be the only place in Japan where the famous japanese customer service and respect does not exist. And yes the concierge confirmed several times that a reservation was made. We only stayed for one night at this town and we didn't have dinner because everything else was closed so be careful, getting a reservation here is not a guarantee they would sit you in for dinner. We have an amazing omakase experience the chef it’s incredible funny and genuine, he make us feel like like family and the atmosphere of this izakaya it’s truly authentic. I will come back on my next trip to Izu. Thanks Matoi!! Price per person: ¥4,000–5,000
