We've always enjoyed eating at Maya Cafe & Cantina because the portions were generous and felt well worth the price. My husband and I went for dinner last night for the first time in a few years. While the menu looked the same, the portion sizes were noticeably smaller. The biggest surprise was the rice and beans. They were served in tiny ramekins—much smaller than the portions we remembered. I always order my sour cream enchiladas with no beans and, in the past, they would substitute an extra serving of rice. This time I received just one small ramekin of rice. My enchiladas had a decent amount of sour cream sauce, but they could have used a little more. My husband ordered the birria tacos, and the consommé was also served in a very small ramekin. Since the dipping sauce is one of the best parts of the dish, there was only enough for about one of the three tacos. He also ordered the pineapple guacamole as an appetizer, but it wasn't brought to the table until we were more than halfway through our meal. The waitress apologized and admitted she had forgotten it, bringing it out already packaged to go. We appreciated her honesty, but it would have been nice if she had simply asked whether we still wanted it. We would have happily said no thanks and had it removed from the bill, especially since guacamole doesn't keep well and will likely go to waste. To finish, we ordered the tres leches cake, which was unfortunately disappointing. Instead of being light and moist, it was very dense and didn't seem to be soaked at all, making it difficult to enjoy. We ended up leaving most of it behind. Overall, the food still had the same great flavors we remember, but the much smaller portions, service missteps, and disappointing dessert made this visit fall short of our previous experiences. We hope this was just an off night, because Maya Cafe & Cantina has always been one of our favorite local spots. Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4 Price per person: $20–30
