I had high expectations of this place and it didn’t hit any of them. First it’s too loud in here as the acoustics of the dining room / bar area is terrible. Can’t have a proper conversation. I had to wear earplugs as I was getting triggered. The best thing on the menu we ordered was the taro fries. 5/5! And everything else was downhill. The crudo was ok 4/5. The hotdog/krapow sausage was 4/5. The red curry mussels were very greasy and underwhelming. 2/5. The calamari was ok 3/5. The buffalo wings 0/5. It had no business being on the menu. It was terrible. The pork belly tacos were ok 2/5 still underwhelming. Seriously have no idea how this place got nominated for a James Beard Price per person: $70–80 Food: 2 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 2

We have been to Mohaniyum many times and wanted to give Merai a try. Merai is truly more of a bar that serves good drinks along with some interesting bites, rather than having food as its main focus. The food overall was fine with a few that we thought were very good, namely the chicken wing, onigiri and beets salad. The chicken wing was deboned and stuffed with rice, very flavorful together. The onigiri and beets salads were more refined than the typical and very tasty. The calamari was over fried so was dry and chewy. Crudo needed more acid. The staff were friendly and efficient. For a bar, it wasn't very noisy. Overall, we had a good experience but I wouldn't come here for just the food. It is a nice hangout place though for a drink or two and a snack. Price per person: $50–60 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3 Recommended dishes: Chicken Wings, Onigiri
