Day trip to Ronda and lunch at Meson Duquesa felt like stumbling into the sort of tavern fantasy writers invent after three bottles of Rioja and a fistfight with destiny. Sat outside in the blistering heat, beneath trees nestled around a quaint plaza. Ordered the paila. First, real Spanish paila. Then the aubergines with honey because the menu practically slapped me across the face and said, “Coward, do it.” The aubergines arrived blistered and crisp at the edges, sweet with honey but not in that sugary tourist-trap way — more like smoke and sweetness slow dancing together. And then there was the beer. Ice-cold. Endless. Delivered by a lovely older gentleman whose English was better than mine. Warm, funny, effortless hospitality—the kind that makes you feel less like a customer and more like a slightly confused traveler who’s accidentally wandered into someone’s family kitchen. Outside, Ronda hung dramatically over the cliffs like the city itself had a flair for theatre. So, if you are in Ronda, forget the new town, and wander to the old town for a bite to eat. Look for the church and the yellow and white building nestled behind four hedges across from the plaza. Price per person: €30–40 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I’m so surprised by the 4.4 review score. I hate to write negative reviews but this was absolutely disgusting. We ordered 5 things, and all 5 were barely edible. Like if you were dying of starvation, yes if you want to enjoy something tasty, zero. Tastes cheap, uninspired, tourist trap. Avoid at all cost.

Mesón Duquesa in Ronda was an absolute delight. The grilled vegetables with cheese were incredible, perfectly prepared and full of flavour. Set in a beautiful plaza, the atmosphere was relaxed and charming, making it an ideal place to sit back and enjoy the moment. We truly had a wonderful time and would happily return.
