Update Dec 2020: I wanted to take this opportunity to update my review. I did return to Michelle's Kitchen after reflecting on the fact that the opening day might have been busy and it is unfair to judge a business based on one encounter. On my second visit, the portion increased significantly and the process of ordering was much more efficient. The food was good and based on this I have updated my initial rating. I visited Michelle's Kitchen on its grand opening day, Saturday 01 August 2020 after waiting many weeks for what I expected to be a delighted day. As a resident of East Hartford, I was tired of driving all the way to Hartford for good Jamaican food, so I was immediately excited for the opening of this restaurant. Immediately after entering, I noticed customers leaving without ordering because of confusion about what was actually available to order. For example, a lady wanted only fried chicken and they refused to sell it to her without rice. I placed an order for friend chicken and white rice as well as oxtail and white rice ( they only had white rice available) as well as two sides. FYI, it's one size only for a hefty $16 for friend chicken and $18 for oxtail. I didn't care about the price, again I was excited to suppprt this business, and the cashier was the friendliest and brightest little girl I've ever met. She was absolutely professional, friendly and even appeared to be managing the customers and rest of the staff. After receiving my order the disappointment kicked me in the face hard. I am trying to post the pictures, but having issues posting them with this review, so I've posted them separately. The presentation was horrible and the amount of food received was less than a small. Two pieces of chicken (one was a piece of chicken NECK and another was a wing) for $16 and a cup of rice. The oxtail was six of the tiniest pieces of oxtail. I am writing this with so much sadness and disappointment, and Ieven considered not saying anything and just not going back. However, leading up to the opening, I told everyone I know to make sure they show up and support, so now I just feel like I need to write this review. Michelle I want your business to succeed and if you were there in person I would have asked to speak to you, so i have no choice but to write this long review. Suggestions: please train your staff, the disorganized chaos behind the counter gave me serious anxiety. I understand its opening day but how is it that you ran out of key staple items?

Im sorry you had that experience! My staff was not fully trained to accommodate such a large rush! They shared the food best as they could but was not up to my standards. I was unable to make my grand opening due to a emergency. I made sure the next day I had a staff meeting and now my staff is full trained and the food presentation will be back to my standards. The meals you paid for should of came with 2 sides and your plate should of been a heavily portion. Please feel free to stop by again and ask for me or my manager Kyle so I can give you 1 free dinner of your choice. Honestly they are so sweet in there, and they give a lot of food for 8-10$. I am extremely pleased with all of it! I have been there twice in a week and will be back again lol. I like the family atmosphere and the customer service, there is this nice little girl that greets you and tells you about the food which is adorable, it's fun to see the food change everyday so I can try something new( their Facebook page updates everyday), and I love that there is a point system and discounts for essential workers. I really enjoy this little hidden gem! Keep it up!

The wife and I have been here twice so far (both visits in the last week). Between the two of us we've had the Oxtail, Fried Chicken, Jerk Chicken, and Curry Goat. The first impression is that the food looks and smells amazing. The dishes are all fantastically delicious and I can't wait until Curry Oxtail comes up on the menu (seriously, the curry is outstanding.) The staff are incredibly friendly, and the portions are super generous. Very happy that the selection changes daily - makes it super easy to try new things (and the daily selection is typically posted on facebook in the mornings.)
