After you have seen Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, visit this restaurant. A lot of people mention that the staff is well-trained at this place. I went today it was very homey her mother was very friendly and my food was amazing seasoned perfectly and the Mac n ch was great yams great and potato salad was great and that’s rare not everyone can make good potatoe salad. Meal type: Lunch Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

We are very sad to say, we won't be returning! Nor at this time will we recommend anyone to this restaurant. We hope things get better!!! The parking was a little frustrating! The parking lot is super small, cramped, and you didn't know where to park. Hopefully they get signs and take down the old signs from the former restaurant that was there. We are aware they haven't been open for long and tried giving them some grace. But we also have to be honest with our review. The staff were very friendly! The cashier was nice, but seemed nervous and a little overwhelmed with our order. But she took her time and did get the order right. If you say Soul Food you expect it to be GREAT! It's a standard you look for when a place says Soul Food. A place can state soul food bc they have collards, fried fish etc. But soul food should also be cooked properly! We spent close to $80.00 for 2 meals. The whiting was a little dry. The collards were too salty. The potato salad had onions and a very bitter taste (tart). One of us put a sweetener packet on it to cut the bitter taste. No one told us it had onions in it. We were surprised it had no paprika on it. We added our own. The corn bread was good but in need of butter (we added our own). The lemon cake was delicious!!! The catfish- one piece was horrible! It was wet inside and almost soggy like. We had to throw it out for fear we would get sick. It didn't seem cooked all the way. The other piece was good. The tartar sauce was good. The candied yams were not all tender. Some tasted a little raw and hard. That was disappointing! The few tender ones were tasty. The Mac n cheese was good. While we waited no one cleaned the tables. We saw trash on one table and picked another table to sit at to wait for our order. The music was not too loud, which was nice. Hopefully more attention will be added to make the inside feel more welcoming. Nice idea to have the menu on the flat screen TV. To look more professional they need to remove the plastic and yellow tags from each TV. The floors looked clean. Staff are seen touching phones, to taking money, then to food. Hopefully they are being sanitary. The seating outside is nice. We were surprised they didn't label the meals to tell us which one was which. We had to figure it out ourselves. They put all of the food in one bag but could have used 2 bags. The cashier only provided 2 tarter sauces. We explained with the big fish order could we have 2 more. She had to ask the owner who said it was fine. The cakes had no listed price, nor a sign saying what kind of cake it was. We asked the cashier how much a slice was? She said I'm not sure and looked it up. From 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest score. We rate them a 3. We hope as time goes by this place will find their rhythm and soar!
