For those unfamiliar, dining in Kyoto can be incredibly busy, whether you’re trying to secure a reservation or simply walking in. We arrived around 7pm without a booking and, as expected, the restaurant was full and buzzing with a fantastic local atmosphere. While there was no immediate seating available, the staff kindly took our name and asked us to return at 8pm. The wait was absolutely worth it. From the moment we were seated, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, setting the tone for what became a memorable first night in Kyoto for our group of five. The menu features a great selection of Izakaya classics, each dish packed with flavour and authenticity. The standout? The Karaage chicken with tartare sauce, an absolute must-order and easily one of the highlights of the meal. If you’re willing to be a little patient, this spot delivers a truly rewarding and authentic Kyoto dining experience. Price per person: ¥3,000–4,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Just like another reviewer, we were turned away for not having a reservation despite there being many open seats. We were outside trying to find somewhere else to go for 15 minutes and only saw one couple go in. This was on my birthday, too. Service: 1

Monaka-do was the best restaurant we ate at in Kyoto! The food was absolutely delicious, the atmosphere was so cosy and warm, and the staff were very welcoming to everyone. When we arrived, even though they were really busy, they still found a spot for us to sit without a problem and the service was so friendly. A true gem and we will definitely be back again!
