It was rather empty, despite being 8pm on a Thursday evening- never a good sign. However, we were well taken care of, never left too long and served promptly; always with a smile. The menu offered a strange mix of Chinese and 'breaded' Japanese dishes. Whilst one page consisted of Japenese rolls, there was little sign of sashimi or a range of fish, but plenty of fried small plates, tofu and hot noodles. We decided on a mix of things; I went for the usual seaweed salad, which for £9 was a rather large amount of ice with a small adornment of seaweed. We had a small dish of fried chicken, which was actually very nicely done; crispy outer and tender, succulent inner, and a large, steaming bowl of udon in broth with tempura. The broth was flavoursome and comforting, and the noodles went down well. I got excited by the appearance of 'natto'- a type of bean that is rarely seen (or liked!) in the West and has an almost gooey, sticky consistency. I ordered it and very much enjoyed the taste of Japan, something I hardly ever see in restaurants in the UK!The décor is rather bland, although they do have a kaiten belt for their lunchtime clientele, which is probably the star piece. However, on our evening visit, it was not functioning and instead we sat at a rather unmentionable dining area, rubbing shoulders with the odd lone diner and a strange mix of people. Service was probably the best thing about this dining experience; charming, gentle and prompt, all members of staff were on top form. I wouldn't recommend it, being honest, but a perfectly 'fine' experience if you're after relatively cheap dinner and a good range of sake.
