On July 8, 2026, I visited Na Susaku in Rijeka after it was recommended by the host where I was staying. Unfortunately, this became one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. I was traveling with two young children who were extremely hungry. I was not aware that a reservation was required, and upon arriving in the evening I politely asked if there was any possibility of ordering food. I even suggested taking the food to go and asked whether something simple could be prepared quickly. Instead of encountering understanding or even basic courtesy, I was met by what appeared to be the restaurant manager, who spoke to me in a very angry and aggressive manner. He repeatedly told me that I should have made a reservation and that he could not help. What shocked me most was not the refusal itself, but the way it was communicated. I genuinely felt as though my presence was an annoyance and that I was being pushed away rather than treated as a potential customer. Being turned away is one thing. Being treated with hostility while standing there with two hungry children is something entirely different. The interaction left me with a strong feeling of rejection and humiliation that I will not easily forget. It is particularly sad because this was my first visit to Rijeka. I had several positive experiences in the city, but unfortunately this encounter overshadowed many of them. When I think back to my time here, I am certain this will be the experience I remember most—and not for the right reasons. Hospitality is not only about serving food; it is about treating people with respect and empathy. On this occasion, I experienced neither. I sincerely hope no other visitor, especially one traveling with children, has to go through what we experienced that evening.
