Nestled on Railway Road in Subiaco, New Normal is a dining spot that remains somewhat under the radar, with only minimal profiles on platforms like Zomato and Instagram. Its lack of comprehensive listings in prominent restaurant directories means detailed insights into its offerings are somewhat scarce. Despite this, past patrons have shared mixed experiences, shedding some light on what to expect.
New Normal's limited service hours, from Tuesday to Saturday, suggest a focus on select evening operations with an additional offering during Friday afternoons. Visitors have noted challenges with portion sizes for larger groups, citing prolonged delivery of dishes and a sense of inadequate quantity for the price. There have been comments about the service staff feeling overworked, possibly attributable to limited personnel capacity versus the restaurant's full capacity.
The restaurant offers a glimpse of culinary potential with an open-plan kitchen, yet feedback suggests the emphasis remains primarily on delivering basic rather than exquisite fare. The most recent review left six years ago hints at operational changes or shifts, though these remain unverified. With the absence of updates from the owners, visitors might want to proceed with caution and set expectations before dining at New Normal.

Food was good (not wow) bar some - Example: Albany Garfish had a lot of bones and we were told to expect bones, cauliflower was undercooked and duck fat potatoes were extremely dry, strawberry dessert was way too sweet.
Service was lacklustre (water was spilled from the glasses when they did re-fills and they never bothered cleaning up, just leaving a puddle on the table - one of my friends thought the glass had cracked coz she wasn’t paying attention), food portions were minimal and came out really slowly, they kept reminding us there was another table waiting for our table and we needed to leave by 8:15pm (but the slowness meant their desserts only came out at 8:45pm; also guess what - they never checked if we were full). After the small plate of five desserts came, I asked if there would be more desserts coming - our server checked with the chef and returned saying that was it with an unapologetic wry smile. The cherry on top was while getting the bill - they accused us of ordering 9 drinks instead of 8 when we had triple-checked around the table. One of the server said “Fine we’ll take it off coz people make mistakes. Maybe you guys ordered one but forgot”.
5 chefs and 3 people looking after a floor of approximately 40 diners (not including rooftop bar). You work the math and efficiency.
Seriously understaffed and just plain rude and dismissive. The chefs were friendly (love the open plan kitchen!) but it felt like the waitstaff (only two servers and 1 manager) were just so overworked and stressed from a full-capacity restaurant. Honestly - in their shoes, I wouldn’t be able to manage such a crazy workload either. How can service be good when they are so short of staff?
What they gave us to share as a table of 16:
7 Bread with mashed pumpkin (small) $21
4 olives x $7 = $28
4 chicken liver parfait x $20 (est) = $80
4 roulade x $20 (est) = $80
4 cuttlefish x $21 = $84
3 garfish x $34 = $102
4 lamb x $36 = $144
5 potatoes x $10 = $50
4 cauliflower x $19 = $76
4 asparagus x $18 = $72
3 beef tenderloin x $50 (est) = $150
5 goats milk x $16 = $80
5 strawberries x $16 = $80
Total: (est) $1,047
Paid: $1,200
Diff: $153
Basically only ten “mains” dishes to be shared between 16 and vegetables to try and fill you up. All small serves.
No acknowledgement or lettering on desserts for a 30th celebration. Left hungry and went to Pitcher and Iron next door. Abysmal service. You’ve been warned. Save your money and go elsewhere
So we made a booking for 5.30pm and arrived at 5.43pm, the waiter said sorry we are doing our afternoon handover right now so can you guys please wait upstairs in the bar while we prep your table for you. The prep took 45 minutes and we had to ask the bartender to check on our table because no one bothered to tell us it was ready.
Once we sat down a waitress quickly came over and instead of giving us a menu or even telling us the menu is written on the wall, she said you need to leave before 8pm because someone else reserved that table after you. Wth honestly.
Our food was served by an extremely unprofessional waiter who obviously did not know the menu, he staggered and paused and tried to recall information when he introduced our food and honestly, it was just sad.
Now onto the food. The asparagus was bitter and overcooked, but the carrots were undercooked! The crispy potatoes were actually burnt and salad undressed. For our main dish, the Garfish, only half of the fish was served and it was NOT de-boned properly!! I did not enjoy getting poked twice by fish bones thank you very much! The burnt butter sauce was not cooked properly either, it was literally melted butter with sugar. I’m just.....please re-educate your chef!
Anyways, the waiter described their dishes as shared dishes but the portion size was not even enough for one person. The half of a fish costed $34 for God’s sake. Eating in this place is honestly throwing money down a drain. You pay for extravagant prices for subpar services and just bad food.
Rated 0.5/10, will definitely NOT return ever again.
