We had two meals at this restaurant, dinner and breakfast. The dinner was good, scotch fillet and confit duck leg, meat was cooked as expected and plates were well seasoned. Some of the veg was undercooked or over cooked. Breakfast was underwhelming, only small plates provided bugged me, no room for toast and eggs etc one or the other it seems... Service was good, friendly faces and smiles. Overall after a long day the dinner was satisfying.

As the previous reviews have mentioned 'terrible'. I would NOT recommend this place at all. $80 for my son and I and neither of us drink alcohol. I had the 'twice cooked lamb' otherwise known as a really bad lamb stew. If these guys had any competition close, they'd be dead in the water. Service was horrendous. The waitress seemed agitated and vague.

The real Nicolas Baudin would be deeply ashamed. In their advertising for the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat, they claim the Nicolas Baudin restaurant is a "superb dining experience" and "a boutique dining experience". It is neither. It is simply awful.

We stayed four nights at the retreat and had intended to eat in the restaurant every night. There aren't many options on KI. But after this experience we couldn't face it again. For the remainder of our stay we brought in our own food and ate on our verandah with the wallabies watching on, a much more enjoyable experience.

Several items on the menu were not available, even though we were the first customers to order. My wife ordered Chicken & Brie Tart with Bell Pepper Jam. It was terrible. I ordered Kangaroo Loin. It was overcooked and, despite the waiter's claim that it would be tender and melt-in-the-mouth, tough as boots. It was drowning in a watery, tasteless jus. Jus?? It couldn't even be called gravy. Just brown, tasteless water and lots of it. We shared some seasonal vegetables. We both like our vegetables crunchy but these were just plain raw. Dessert was Slow Cooked Chocolate Tart with Warm White Chocolate Sauce. It was marginally better than the rest of the meal.

The music they had on was loud and raucous. Totally unsuitable for a restaurant. We asked for a change. The waiter put on something different but it was just as bad. They clearly thought it was preferable to please themselves rather than their customers. This was repeated at breakfast next morning. I shake my head in disbelief. The best part of the meal was the wine. No kudos to the restaurant for that.

Without doubt one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Had it been half way decent they would have had our custom a further three nights. Their loss.
