Hidden gem of our trip in Kyoto! We spontaneously decided we wanted to try kaiseki while visiting the city. The popular spots all needed reservations well in advance or priced way above our budget. Luckily we discovered Nishimura, which we were able to walk in for dinner. The owner was super friendly, and even used his translate app on the phone to communicate with us throughout our meal. We felt so welcomed and had each dish explained to us on his phone despite the language barrier. Every dish presented was a piece of art - we started with pickled veggies, then sea bream, tuna and yellow tail sashimi. These tasted very fresh! We also had bamboo kelp soup which was refreshing. The last two dishes were simmered flatfish and grilled Spanish mackerel with miso. Simply delicious food. For dessert, we got a slice of melon and hot tea. We were enjoying our hot tea and the owner was really sweet, gifting us chocolate to have with our tea. Because the restaurant wasn't crowded, with just another group dining in, we found the space was peaceful and the perfect spot to have a nice dinner and conversation with loved ones. We stumbled onto this tiny place for lunch and were blown away. Bento box set lunch, built of grilled and raw fish, vegetables, and tofu, was a visual work of art and one delicate and exquisite taste after another. The chef runs a one-person kitchen and his care and attention to detail made the meal memorable. Extraordinary to find a place like this by sheer serendipity. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Nishimura (寺町 西むら): High Price, Average Experience I recently visited Nishimura (寺町 西むら) and left feeling thoroughly underwhelmed, especially considering the final bill. To be clear, the food was perfectly acceptable, but it was simply average. Nothing on the plate stood out; the flavors were mild, the presentation was standard, and the dishes lacked any special element that would distinguish them from a quality meal at a lower price point. My main confusion is the exorbitantly high price. I am truly not sure why the cost is set so high for such an unremarkable dining experience. The value for money here is very poor. While the restaurant might aim for a premium segment, the food itself does not rise to meet that expectation. It's a place that charges a high-end price for a very ordinary meal.
