I'm writing this review some years after our experience, and I'm sad to hear a local joint tied closely to happy memories is closed. My wife and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon in 2019. To say it's expensive is an understatement. By sheer chance, we ended up with a room in walking distance of Ono Kau Kau. It wasn't the greatest food, nor the cheapest food, but it was a great combination. We tried to limit restaurants to one and done to experience as much as we can, but we did order two or three times from this hole in the wall since it was often less than $20 a person. The menu featured American-style Chinese with Hawaiian modifications. Plenty of pork, spam and even reference to the Loco Moco. It was definitely of the takeout-ilk, but it wasn't overly greasy and tasted pretty good. Maybe with a little magic, Ono Kau Kau can re-open and be the secret local gem for someone else.
