We discovered this charming little spot during a hanami day trip, and it ended up being one of the most memorable food experiences we’ve had in Nara—not just because of the food, but because of the people behind it. We ordered the black curry with rice and a ham-and-egg vegetable sandwich, and both dishes exceeded my expectations in terms of portion size. For the price, the servings were surprisingly generous. The curry was rich and comforting, perfect after a long walk, while the sandwich felt almost like an American-style portion—thick, filling, and packed with ingredients. Even the vegetable salad stood out; it didn’t feel like a simple side dish at all because of how substantial it was. One thing to keep in mind is that everything is made to order, so it does take some time before your food arrives. But honestly, the wait didn’t feel long at all. The restaurant is run by a lovely older couple, along with what seemed like close friends and family members, and watching them energetically prepare each dish with care was part of the fun experience. As someone visiting during hanami season, I really appreciated how they even took the time to suggest nearby cherry blossom spots in Nara. The atmosphere is another highlight. If you get the chance, I recommend sitting outside. There’s a peaceful riverside view that makes the whole dining experience feel calm and refreshing—especially during spring. If there’s one thing to note, it’s that menu options can become limited later in the day depending on ingredient availability. We arrived a bit late and had fewer choices, but it didn’t take away from the experience at all. Overall, Ogopogo is more than just a place to eat—it’s a place where you feel genuinely welcomed. Absolutely fun place. Very small local kind of place. Fun cheerful atmosphere between the husband, wife and granddaughter. We were there during bon (Summer holiday), so they were relatively busy. Food was amazing. I think this place is like a treasure of Japan. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
