I don’t think anyone can offer a benefit of doubt with Oku’s exclusive reservation policies. They give no explanation or apologies as to why only Japanese speakers are allowed to dine in their restaurant. I could understand if the chef wants to create an experience and tell a story with the food, but can’t do that in another language. However, the website makes no mention to that as the reason. Oku could offer links or references to translators that could help them share their restaurant, but they lack that sophistication. Instead, the website reads as if it’s the patron’s fault that they can’t enter the restaurant. This is either an act of cowardice, currying favor to a xenophobic customer base, or admission to their own bigotry. This is quite the opposite of why a should be in the business of hospitality.

I have to agree with others who give this low ratings due to racism. I’ve had many fine dinners where language was no barrier to entry. Please consider this policy.
