Operator25 has a particularly interesting starting point because its location comes with a story. The Melbourne CBD café occupies a heritage-listed building associated with the city's former telephone exchange, and even the name “Operator25” connects back to that history. That immediately gives the business something many cafés have to work much harder to create: a reason behind the name. I think that matters because hospitality names are often chosen because they sound attractive rather than because they communicate anything meaningful. When the name, building and history connect, customers have something much easier to understand and remember. The concept also demonstrates how heritage can be presented without making a hospitality business feel old-fashioned. A historical story can provide the foundation while the café itself remains contemporary. For people searching for brunch in Melbourne CBD, hidden cafés in Melbourne or unique Melbourne café experiences, this type of backstory can be particularly valuable. It provides another reason to choose the venue beyond simply comparing menus. There is also considerable storytelling potential in a building like this. Historical photographs, previous uses of the space, architectural details and the origin of the name can all become part of how people understand the café. And none of that requires manufacturing a marketing story. The story already exists. Operator25 is therefore a good example of something I think more hospitality businesses should explore: before trying to invent a brand narrative, look at the history of the building, neighbourhood, name and people behind the business. Sometimes the most interesting story has been sitting there long before the café opened.

What a fantastic little cafe with Asian-inspired flavours. We ordered the soft shell crab omelette, duck confit congee and beef bulgogi taco. It’s an unusual combination of dishes, but every one of them was delicious. The drinks were great too. I’ll definitely be back. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The corn fritters with poached eggs were delicious and full of flavor. I also had the sourdough toast, which was quite simple. Overall, I felt the food was a little expensive for the ingredients, but the service and atmosphere made for a pleasant breakfast. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
