I travel to Japan frequently for business and am familiar with most of Tokyo’s five-star hotels. During my current trip, I stayed twice at the Hotel Okura Tokyo, and while the rooms in the Prestige Tower are truly excellent, the Orchid Restaurant clearly falls short of what one would expect from a breakfast venue in a hotel of this category — especially considering the very high prices. The selection of dishes is wide, but the overall quality is mediocre. Most items are poorly seasoned, unimaginatively presented, and often only lukewarm. The atmosphere resembles more a train-station waiting hall or a university cafeteria than a refined Japanese luxury hotel restaurant. Although dozens of staff members are visible — constantly speaking into their headsets and earpieces — they seem unable to handle even the most basic requests beyond standard procedures. When I asked for a glass of sparkling water, I was told this was “not included in breakfast” and that I could instead order a 1-liter bottle of Pellegrino. In over ten years of staying at top hotels throughout Japan, I have never encountered such a response. In summary, The Orchid Restaurant is a clear weak point in an otherwise impressive property. The rooms and facilities of the Okura are outstanding, but the breakfast experience was such a disappointment that I am honestly reconsidering future stays here. Food: 2 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
