I bought pastries from this store during my visit to Rome. I took the €50 with me to the bakery as I needed to break it up into smaller bills. I gave the man at the cash register €50 note and he gave me a change from €10 and insisted that's the bill I gave him. He promptly crumpled up my receipt. When I insisted that I gave him €50 bill, his sister who was making coffee started to yell very loudly that the cash register is automated. They did not offer to open the cash register and basically dismissed me making me feel like a fool. There was a line of people waiting to get their morning coffee so I was told to step aside. My advice for people shopping there is to stipulate out loud the value of their note before handing it over. I'm sure that I'm just another tourist who got ripped off at this place. People like these give Rome a bad name.
