I would like to give Ougiya a higher review, but I will only do that if certain aspects of the service change... The food is excellent, exactly the quality I was expecting from Sapporo. The staff were friendly and mildly engaging on the surface. The atmosphere was very local, as this place is tucked well into the 2nd floor of one of the Nijo Market buildings. But my sentiments slowly eroded when I received the bill... My bill came out to over JPY 18,000. I ordered 3 dishes and 2 drinks. The food: crab leg, small grilled potatoes, green beans. The drinks: 2 sparkling waters. There was an additional service charge for the ootoshi. While I was expecting not a cheap bill as I knowingly ordered crab leg, this price blew me out of the water. I made a face to the staff, but the entire time they made every effort to make it very clear their English is limited. The menus are not in English (understandable, I'm in Japan). The menu didn't show prices - my mistake for not inquiring. Later that night I went to a wonderful yakitori spot nearby and had an excellent dining experience - both flavorful and fair, transparent pricing. I explained what happened and both the staff and patrons were shocked, and apologized to me on behalf of this establishment's hospitality. You'll note that all the most recent reviews are from foreigners, giving it 1 star based on similar experiences. I certainly hope that there isn't such a severe targeted pricing disparity based on local or foreigner status (and I explained to the staff that I live in Japan), but the writing appears to be on the wall. I don't think this was always the case, and if they priced every patron fairly, I would not hesitate to go back. But only until then. Crab legs are expensive, but this was absolutely exorbitant. The rest of my trip in Sapporo, and elsewhere in Hokkaido validated this. Sapporo has so many wonderful dining options that are cost-transparent and cost-justified. Stick with those.
