This restaurant is very close to our hotel where we stayed for three nights.  We went there our first night and had an excellent meal and a very attentive waiter.  Since we tend to wear ourselves out when we travel and it is close  and the food is good, we decided to come back and also had good food and good service from the same waiter.  We decided we may as well go back for our last meal in Italy and our waiter told us to be sure to have the steak. So we went back on a Saturday night and of course it was very crowded.  The waiter asked us to come back in an hour and we did. They had had two very large parties which took over the restaurant and I don't think this crowd was expected.  We ended up sitting in another room and getting a different waiter.  We were seated at a long table at the back of the room with two other parties.  It was very uncomfortable because the back of the table was a long banquette which meant the person sitting in the middle was trapped inside.  The atmosphere seemed very different.  We got our menus and we were not sure which steak to order.  Our waiter came over to us and threw the menus at us and said, "yeah, what do you want?"  He was Russian and his command of both Italian and English was poor.  Obviously we could not ask him about the food so we ordered a cut of steak we saw another table ordering.  We got the steaks and they were inedible.  The first bited were good and had a good taste and proper doneness. After a couple of bites, our steaks were practically raw and almost impossible to cut.  They were full of fat..not marbled but chunks of fat.  I turned the steak over and saw that there was a large bone underneath the cut.  The waiter was inattentive and did not come over once he dropped off the steaks.  I finally caught his eye and told him the steaks were not good.  He insisted they were and I showed him how they were all fat, bone, and gristle.  He seemed to be very angry and not only did he take our steaks away but took our salads away as well.  We figured that someone would come over and ask us what the problem was and offer us different steaks or another entree. We waited over 20 minutes and nobody came.  Finally this waiter came back and threw dessert menus at us and we informed him we did not want dessert.  He later brought the check over.  I went to the manager and told her what happened and she offered us a drink or dessert.  She finally offered to take the salads off the bill and did not apologize for how it was handled.  She said she could not take the steaks off because she had to pay for those steaks and that they were good steaks.  Believe me, they were the worst I had ever been served even by low cost steak chains.  She told us the waiter told her we had practically finished the steaks and we should have come over to her earlier.  I said we had assumed that when steaks are sent back the manager or chef would come out to see what the problem was and we should not have to walk over to the front of the restaurant to find her.  I felt that she was accusing us of trying to scam the restaurant.  She dropped the service and cover charges and the cost of the salads from the bill but we paid for the steaks.  It was not how we envisioned our final evening in Italy turning out.  Yes, they had good food for two days but this third day they had shown themselves clearly not up to the task of handling crowds and unconcerned with customer service.  I give them a big thumbs down!

Amazing dinner with my partner at this lovely restaurant, just outside of the hectic city center. We had a warm mixed seafood started to share, a plate of pasta with seafood each (delicious and home made!) and a fried seafood plate to share. All accompanied by a fantastic white suggested by the thoughtful host and a coffee to top it off. Excellent quality ingredients, interesting dishes and nice quantities in a peaceful atmosphere made this a fantastic evening out! Highly recommended.

Fun, contemporary decor.  Excellent fish tartar.  Interesting wine.  Replacement pasta dish, ok. Went with group of eight on Wed. night - business was slow, so a smaller party could easily have walked in without reservation.  Attentive service, which matched the upscale prices. Used to be impossible to get good fish in Florence, but Pane e Olio demonstrates that the era of frozen, whiffy seafood is past.  The meal opened with a substantially-portioned amuse-bouche that was a kind of seafood version of the local standard "ribollita" (Tuscan bread, white-bean, and black cabbage soup).  Had fish tartar as antipasto, which was delightful; the only slight disappointment was my pasta.  The kitchen ran out of the dish listed, and offered an off-menu replacement.  Didn't catch exactly what it was (another fish); it was fine, but not spectacular - more four-stars than five.  However, on the whole, Pane e Olio was a wonderful experience; the atmosphere and presentation feel current when compared with the multitude of Tuscan/Traditional trattorie that vie for tourist attention in Florence. Would happily go back if looking for a special occasion restaurant.
