On a recent trip to the San Diego area, I came across Peachy's Market & Grill, a counter service grill offering freshly made dishes inside a small Persian market. Reasonable prices, delicious food, and an easy grab-n-go or outdoor tables for lingering make it a popular spot for a quick bite. On our visit, we ordered up a number of items to share between the four of us. Salad, chicken and lamb kabobs, falafel, pita bread, hummus, tabouleh, and cucumber yogurt dip (Mast o Khiar) made a lunchtime feast. And of course we had to try the housemade Persian baklava for dessert. The kabobs at Peachy's were perfectly done. The lamb was rich and tender. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned. Served over a bed of basmati rice with some pieces of pita, each made a filling dish. The rest of our feast did not disappoint either. The perfectly crisp exterior of the falafel was a nice counterpoint to the soft, melt-in-your-mouth interior. The hummus was thick and creamy, and the tabouleh popped with flavors of sweet tomato, peppery garlic, bright lemon, and fresh parsley. A bit of falafel flaked into some pita bread with the tabouleh, hummus, and tahini was absolutely divine. And then there's the housemade Persian baklava. These pieces of layers of fillo dough, creamy butter, sweet honey, and salty pistachios made the perfect ending to the meal. While the squares are small, they are so rich and sweet that a small piece is instantly satisfying. Overall, I really enjoyed Peachy's and can see why it is so popular on Yelp. It reminds me a lot of the early days of Portland's own Ya Hala restaurant which started as a similar grill and takeout counter inside of World Foods, when it as just a small market in the Montavilla neighborhood. If Peachy's were closer, it would definitely be a go-to spot for easy and quality take-out food. Not to mention all those great Middle Eastern staples that I like to keep stocked in my pantry.
