Looking for some Asian spice in Utica? If so, Pho Mekong House of Noodles is the way to go. Restaurant is located in a run down building in Bagg's Square East, where Elizabeth Street and John Street intersect. I was initially skeptical to enter this restaurant when I was searching for a place for dinner, but I'm pleased that I did. There are about 14 tables in this restaurant that is managed by one waitress. I've seen two different waitresses during my visits here, and both are very personable. One even pointed out and asked where I came from because I was not a regular. My last visit here, that same waitress was able to remember these 3 regular customers' exact orders. Price-wise, it is reasonable for the amount of food Pho Mekong prepares per dish. Great for next day lunch if you have leftovers! Food: V40 - Bun Cha Gio, Thit Nuong (Vermicelli Entree, 4/5): This is definitely an order you should try if not sure what to order. I asked for extra fish sauce since I usually like mine that way, but I did not even use it. You can choose the meat you would like in addition with an egg roll. They don't go easy on the meat, so that was a definite plus! If you're not sure what this dish is, it's pho vermicelli noodles with mint, bean sprouts, lettuce, cucumbers, and peanuts. It is kind of like pho noodle soup without the soup, for the fish sauce brings a different taste that you may either love or hate. I've tried better at other places but again, meat amount is more than plenty so points for that. SP2 - Chicken Pad Si Yu (Special, 4/5): Order this spicy if you're not a fan of sweet. The waitress recommended this to me, and I'm glad I tried something different. I prefer all my dishes spicy so when I took my first bite, I knew this was a little teaser as my taste buds changed from sweet to a nice spicy. This noodle dish is pretty similar to drunken noodles or Pad Kee Mao. The only difference is the sweetness initially. I would order this again because it is my favorite noodle dish I tried here. SP6 - Chicken Red Curry (Special, 3/5): I'll try curries anywhere at restaurants I go to, especially Thai and Indian restaurants. I thought this would be similar, but it wasn't due to the consistency. Neither a dry or wet curry, it was more like one of its chicken dishes that comes with vegetables. The ingredients were bland even when ordered spicy on their own, so I ate them with the "curry" which brought more flavor. I pretty much dumped my rice into it and mixed it. I would order this but wouldn't be at the top of my list to try again. S43 - Seafood Pad Thai (Special, 2/5): I love Pad Thai, and I get a random craving for it intermittently. The only good thing about this Pad Thai was the type of seafood and amount you get. It consisted of crab, shrimp, and scallops. My first comment on this would have to be the type of noodles, which was thinner than normal which changed the texture a bit. In addition, the noodles seemed overcooked. With this, the waitress gave me fish sauce to go with the Pad Thai and immediately got confused. I took my first bite and knew why I needed fish sauce. Flavor was lacking and knew I would never order Pad Thai here. After, I used the fish sauce and ate my dish.. Not sure what the noodle dish was called because it wasn't Pad Thai. I took half of it home for lunch the following day though! Casual dining. Service can be a hit or a miss because there is only one waitress. If on a busy night, the service will be slower than what you would hope for. There have been two instances where my water cup did hit the bottom, but she came around and noticed my cup was empty. Other than that, this place is average for Asian food but good personable waitresses!
