Venturing to Torquay for a belated Valentine's excursion proved worthwhile despite our initial reservations. On a prior summer visit to Pier Point Restaurant and Bar, we experienced what can only be described as the nadir of coffee flavors, likely a consequence of our accustomed taste for 'beans to cup' coffee. Returning, we inquired about the coffee preparation method, and upon expressing our preference for takeaway, were directed to its sibling establishment, Pier Point Fish and Chips. Initially intent on just coffee, the sight of others dining tempted us to order Fish and Chips. Intent on enjoying our meal peacefully outdoors near Pier Point Restaurant and Bar (as captured in our video), we were promptly informed by a server that seating was not permitted. This policy, perhaps reasonable in peak season, seemed absurd in the desolate ambiance of February, where empty tables languished both inside and out. The management's inability to recognize that the sight of satisfied diners could attract passersby suggests a reevaluation of their hospitality strategy is in order, unless their ambition is to minimize exertion. Moreover, considering our presentable appearance (evidenced by a photo taken five minutes prior), this rigid stance seems particularly unjustified. Turning to the culinary critique, the coffee remained disappointingly consistent with our previous experience, hinting at either stale or inferior quality Robusta beans over the preferable medium Arabica. However, the Fish and Chips presented a stark contrast. The fish was exemplary, melting in the mouth with a perfectly crispy batter—a must-try for any enthusiast of the dish, offering a rare opportunity to indulge in such succulent seafood. The chips, however, paled in comparison; dry and tasteless, they failed to complement the fish. Adopting a dual-frying technique could transform these fries into a creamy interior encased in a crispy shell, potentially elevating this establishment into the top echelons of UK culinary destinations. A reconsideration of both management flexibility and culinary technique is advised to enhance the overall dining experience.
