We were driving along Highway 101, hundreds of miles from home, and decided to stop by Post Ranch Inn because we were considering staying there next week. As American Express Centurion members, this property was highly recommended to us by the Centurion concierge, so we were excited to see it before making our reservation. Unfortunately, our first impression was extremely disappointing. Upon arriving, we were stopped at the entrance by what appeared to be a groundskeeper who was acting as the security guard. We politely explained that we were interested in booking a stay for the following week and simply wanted to take a quick look at the property before making our decision. We were immediately told that we could not enter without a reservation. I then asked if he could contact a manager and let them know that we were American Express Centurion members who had specifically come to see the resort because it had been recommended to us. We were told that the manager would come down to speak with us. We waited, but no one ever showed up. After waiting for some time, we eventually left. Luxury hospitality begins long before check-in. It starts with how potential guests are welcomed. We were not asking for complimentary services or special treatment—only the opportunity to briefly view a property we were seriously considering booking. Instead, we felt dismissed and ignored. The complete lack of communication and the failure of any manager to come speak with us was extremely unprofessional and left us questioning whether this is the level of hospitality guests should expect from a property with such an outstanding reputation. Sadly, because of this experience, we chose to look elsewhere for our stay.

Dear Attitude Success, Greetings from Big Sur. We thank you for being a valued Centurion member and we appreciate your review. We are sorry to learn that you were kept waiting during your visit. Our Director of Guest Relations was on his way down the hill when he learned you were hoping to speak with him. Unfortunately, you had left before he arrived and we’re sorry that we missed the chance to connect with you. In respecting the privacy of those staying with us, unscheduled property tours are typically not available. It sounds as though our team member was trying to accommodate your request by reaching out to a manager, though in hindsight, we should have communicated more clearly that a walk-in tour would likely not be possible. We regret that this resulted in a disappointing first impression, particularly as you were considering a stay with us. Should your travels bring you back to Big Sur, we hope you might reconsider and allow us the opportunity to welcome you as our guest. In the spirit of hospitality, Tim LeeGeneral Manager

This place is one of a kind special. This was the most relaxing vacation I have been to in my life. The staff anticipated and took care of any of my wishes, in many cases anticipating that need before I knew. Beautiful grounds, in particular, Billy's Trail which is majestic. The spa service was absolutely top notch, did I forget to mention the amazing meals delivered to your room or taken at the most beautiful restaurant I have ever been to. The falconry experience was the most memorable. Truly amazing experience.

Dear Gary, Big Sur is a magical destination, especially for those who unplug from daily life and embrace the opportunity to reset the body and soul by reconnecting with nature and taking in the majestic landscapes that surround us. We thank you for sharing your experience and letting others know what they can look forward to when joining us. We’re especially pleased that you explored our expansive grounds and took advantage of the many experiences that await, including our always-popular falconry experience. On behalf of your many Post Ranch Inn friends, the pleasure was ours and we hope the months and years ahead bring us together again. In the spirit of hospitality, Tim Lee General Manager

Been staying here 20 years. It’s on a slow decline. “Newer” rooms are subjectively rather ugly, restaurant is predictable but not amazing really. Hotel and restaurant staff are clearly loyal, friendly but the cheapest option, all the talent is gone. At Aman prices it just doesn’t deliver that experience. Too many shortcuts and profits being squeezed. It needs new vision, management, and an overhaul returning to its roots. A good old fashioned look in the mirror as it were. At breakfast I asked for hot sauce and they brought Cholula in a ramekin. All that fancy kitchen and they don’t even bother to make their own hot sauce. They got rid of the breakfast buffet. They had out some sad Cisco white bread blueberry muffin mix muffins. Gone are the exquisite healthy foods crafted with care. The only thing I smelled in the restaurant was profits. Thank god for reviews so we can give honest and direct feedback. Maybe they can get back on track

Dear Bob Guila, We thank you for your many years of loyalty and appreciate you taking the time to share such candid feedback. We are saddened to learn of the impressions left during your most recent visit and are sorry that the experience fell short of what you have come to know and expect from Post Ranch Inn over the past two decades. While we continue to invest in the guest experience, including the recent debut of our reimagined spa, we recognize from your comments that there were aspects of this visit that did not reflect the experience you have treasured through the years. Should your time allow, I would welcome the opportunity to speak by phone so that I can learn more about your visit and offer a more personal apology for the moments that disappointed you. My contact details are provided below, and I hope you will use that email address to share your contact information and a convenient time for us to connect. We thank you once more for your longstanding loyalty, and I hope to have the opportunity to speak with you in the days ahead. In the spirit of hospitality,Tim LeeGeneral Manager timlee@postranchinn.com
