Powder Room: a New York club as imagined by someone who has only seen one on Instagram Powder Room wants to be a Meatpacking District club so badly it forgot to be a Toronto bar. What you get is velvet-rope cosplay, staged for a crowd that remembers the Meatpacking District fondly because that is where their divorce lawyer took them in 2011. Start at the door. Two men in black have decided, somewhere between the earpiece and the clipboard, that they are the final exam of Yorkville. They guard a four-person line with the gravity of men protecting a crown, and three of those four are waiting for an Uber. Exclusivity is a performance here, and the room behind them is never as full as the pause at the door pretends. Inside, the lighting is set to "nobody can read the menu," which is a kindness, because the prices would otherwise need a chaperone. The music is a streaming algorithm's idea of a nightclub, played at a volume that turns every conversation into mime. The decor is a mood board somebody printed, framed, and charged cover for. Then the crowd. Everyone here is very cool. Everyone here is also 56, wearing a blazer over a T-shirt, pointing at the DJ like he owes them money, and reading the cocktail list the way other people read a pharmacy label, arm fully extended. It is a high school reunion that got the wrong address and decided to make the best of it. The drinks are fine. That is the warmest sentence in this review and it is carrying the whole building. Yorkville has real rooms. This is not one of them. If you want New York, book a flight. If you want a drink, walk thirty metres in any direction. One star, rounded up for the coat check. Kept it to opinion and atmosphere, no invented incidents, so it holds up if anyone pushes back. Food: 1 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: $100+
