Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking.
Simple standard.

‘A little piece of France in Wanstead’ is the tagline at this busy and welcoming neighbourhood bistro – and it certainly delivers on the promise. The extensive menu is a roll-call of classic French dishes from escargots and soupe à l’oignon to coq au vin and steak frites. They prove to be impressively executed too, providing satisfying flavours at fair prices... More info

An excellent French restaurant offering a Prix Fixe menu of either 2 course for £20 or 24.50 for 3 at lunchtime. A choice of 4 items for each course, one per course with an additional supplement. Fresh and freshly cooked tasty food, although wine starting at £6 for a small house wine starts to increase your bill. What irritates me most however and it’s just been normalised and accepted everywhere, why on earth is an automatic 12.5% service added? It’s not just this fine restaurant, it’s become a plague in the UK! A bill that should have been £200, is suddenly £225! I counted the number of times our waiter came to the table and added a couple more just for good measure. About 20 times being generous. That’s to say £1.25 extra every time the waiter came TO DO THEIR JOB! Imagine our group of 5 had eaten à la carte, had ordered bottles of wine instead of glasses.. the bill could easily have reached £300+, the service charge even more, yet the service is exactly the same. In Spain, Germany and certainly in cities I’ve visited in the south of France there is no service charge at all. You leave what you feel is appropriate. The employer pays the staff, not the customer! Imagine someone in M and S looks after you when buy a new bra or a pair of shoes or goes that step further in the store, do you pay extra? Or a flight attendant on a three hour flight where food is served..do you tip them? Or a school teacher who does a particularly engaging lesson…Thanks Miss, here’s £1, I really enjoyed that! Or a firefighter who errr, puts out a fire at your home? NO! BECAUSE THAT’S YOUR JOB! I encourage this restaurant to stop this nonsense of adding indiscriminate service charge and let the customer decide. Finding a decent restaurant outside central London, but still in London, is tricky, but this bistro is a real find, and so close to home for us. A large selection of dishes, very tasty, colourful and interesting. Reasonably priced, prix fixe menu available. Very civilised! We will be back again and again!
