Read very positive reviews of RM. Pangek Ombilin while on a visit to Batam. Wanted to eat Nasi Padang without being fleeced by tourist prices. Visited during non peak lunch hour of 2pm and place was not crowded. FYI restaurant is at the side of the main road and our local Grab driver could not locate it on the map, though the Google map listing was accurate. Ordered ayam bakar Padang (grilled marinated chicken Padang style), dendeng belado (thin marinated fried dried meat in chilli), begedil (fried potato patties), beef rendang and rice. Came with 2 vegetable dishes, but if it's not eaten then it won't be charged to the bill. The ayam bakar Padang was very well marinated and had a nice char to the meat, giving it a slight smoky flavor. The beef rendang is not the dry typical Padang style but cooked in an almost korma style, very tasty. The dendeng belado was very spicy but is also very flavorful. Rice is definitely the local Indonesian rice variety. Downed it with the local teh Sosro drink. Price paid was definitely not tourist prices, less than 100k rupiah for 2 pax. Please come here for the food which is fantastic and not the ambience, as it is just a basic roadside restaurant. Food is definitely deserving of its high Google review ratings.
