Pride, North Coast, 2015$99Summit Ranch has a history rich in the texture of 19th Century winemaking. The first records of vineyard plantings date back to 1869. Built in 1890, the gravity-fed winery served the entire mountain, although sometime during Prohibition, it was destroyed by a fire. Now all that is left are the ruins of the original stone walls. Founded in 1990 by Jim and Carolyn Pride, Pride Mountain Vineyards sits high up on Spring Mountain. Riding the crest of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,100 feet, the 235 acre property is bisected by the Napa/Sonoma county line. While in 1890 one winery served the entire mountain community, in 1990 government regulations required that Pride Mountain Vineyards have two separate facilities, one in Napa County and one in Sonoma County, with the division down the center of the crush pad. Wines produced here now are designated Napa Valley, Sonoma County or with percentages of both on the label, supporting the tag line, "One Ranch ~ Two Counties.

Pierre Péters, "Cuvée de Réserve", NV$152Camille Péters, around 1919, was one of the first growers of the Champagne region to decide to bottle wine under his own name. In 1932, at the ripe old age of 12, Pierre Péters, the eldest son of Camille, began to attend his first exhibitions alone and develop sales for his father's brand, and never looked back. He took over operations in 1944, and released his first vintage in 1946 under the "Pierre Péters" brand. The estate, now run by Rodolphe Péters, owns just over 19 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards , all of which are primarily located in the Côte des Blancs, where the soils are chalky and Chardonnay is king. Their flagship Champagne, the "Cuvée de Réserve", is a Blanc de Blancs style made from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes

DuMOL, "Isobel", Sonoma Coast, 2015$99If you are looking for great California Chardonnay, then look no further than the Charles Heintz Vineyard. The Heintz family has farmed the same coastal ridgeline in western Sonoma County for 100 years, and Charles is the 3rd generation farmer of Heintz Ranch. DuMOL has been sourcing grapes from these old vines for 17 years, and their "Isobel" is a perfect expression of this site. New World power combined with cool, coastal terroir??? Sounds like a recipe for success

Domaine Vacheron, "Chambrates", 2016$129The Vacheron family name in Sancerre is viticultural royalty. Three generations ago the family took over their first vineyards. As their family grew so did the pedigree of their bottlings. Now encompassing biodynamic farming, hand harvests, and some of the finest vineyards in Sancerre. "Chambrates" is one of several vineyards planted in limestone soils mixed with red clay. It is not a wine trying to re-invent Sancerre, but to be an elevated version of the classic style

Max Ferd. Richter, "Graacher Dompropst", 2003$79The estate of Max Ferd. Richter has been passed down from father to son for the past 300 years. The current reins are held by Dr. Dirk Richter, the 9th generation. Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel. The same attention is paid to all vines, from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins. Their grapes are harvested much later than that of most growers and is done entirely by hand. Three passes are done to select the best qualities to eliminate all inferior grapes and to keep perfect botrytis bunches. Contrary to popular belief, Riesling develops beautifully with age. Its residual sugar and acidity help to preserve the wine while all of the wonderful flavors come together over time. This 2003 bottling from the Dompropst vineyard, near the town of Graach, is just starting to hit its stride right now

Vinho Verde, Aveleda, 2016$46Spring is in the air. The birds are chirping, and plants are coming to life. What other wine would you drink to celebrate spring than Vinho Verde? Literally meaning "green wine", Vinho Verde is a crisp, aromatic wine from northwest Portugal. Based on the Alvarinho grape, this wine shows off a mélange of fresh citrus and stone fruits, along with a fresh minerality and lovely floral notes. Deliciously quaffable, it's a perfect beverage to sip on as we wait for these April showers to bring May flowers

Pax, "The Hermit", North Coast, 2015$105Pax is back! Pax Mahle started his eponymous brand in 2000 after years of working in the wine business. He created rich, full-bodied Syrahs from some of the best sites around California. In 2008, a rift in the partnership behind Pax Wine Cellars caused him to have to dissolve the brand for a short while, focusing his efforts on his new label, Wind Gap. The label change also brought a stylistic change in the wines to a more lean, restrained style. He re-launched the Pax brand in 2014, again showcasing Syrah from many of the best vineyard sites in northern California. "The Hermit" is made from 100% Syrah, with grapes sourced from all 5 of their Syrah vineyards

Andrew Will, "Ciel du Cheval", Red Mountain, 2014$138Chris Camarda was Washington's original "Garagiste". He began his love affair with wine in the 80's, stemming from his many years in the restaurant industry, and he decided to launch Andrew Will in 1989. His first vintages were made in a 60 foot by 10 foot room in the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle, literally about the size of a garage. These days, he has moved operations to a larger facility on Vashon Island, and he's been especially keen on focusing on clonal selections that best fit the growing conditions in each particular vineyard. The Ciel du Cheval vineyard, planted in 1975 and one of the most prestigious in Washington, has been being used by Chris since his first vintage. He says, "I am not interested in the similarities of my wines, but the differences. The different identities of our vineyards and varietals, which explore the identity of Washington State as distinct from California or Bordeaux

Did we mention it is also owned and oporated by the notorious minds behind Chateau Lynch-Bages

Vincent Girardin, "Les Gravières, 2011$94The history of Maison Vincent Girardin is relatively recent. In 1980, at the age of 19, Vincent Girardin, the son of a family of winegrowers based in Santenay since the 17th century, decided to strike out on his own and began producing wine from five acres of vines that he had inherited from his parents. From his earliest youth, Vincent had a passion for working with vines and great respect for the potential that they represent, and his ambition was to produce his own wine. The quality of his wines was quickly recognized by connoisseurs all over the world, and this enabled him to expand his activity, focusing primarily on the great white and red wines of the Côte de Beaune. Les Gravières is arguably the best vineyard in all of Santenay, and this wine comes from a plot of 45 year old vines

Jean-Louis ChaveIf there were a name that was synonymous with the hill of Hermitage, it would be that of Jean-Louis Chave. The family began making Hermitage in 1481, passing down wisdom through the generations to create some of the most perfectly balanced wines available. Traditionalists to the core, the key to the perfect balance of his wines is the remarkable blending skill. This creates wines of great nuance, harmony, depth and aging potential

Bernard Levet, "La Chavaroche", 2011$187The story of this domaine begins in 1936, when Nicole Levet's grandfather first purchased vineyards in Ampuis. His wines were only sold to local bistros and cafes, and delivered in barrels. Then in 1966 Nicole's father, Marius Chambeyron, began bottling a small portion of the wine produced at the estate. Unfortunately, Nicole's father fell ill in 1982, and that next year Nicole's husband, Bernard Levet, took over winemaking and vineyard management duties. That presious 1983 vintage was when the domaine really began to develop. They have since increased their vineyard holdings, as well as expanded their cellar capacity. Although production is still small, they continue to produce some of the most rustic, classically-styled Côte-Rôtie in the market today

Domaine Les Alexandrins, 2015$105This is a project quarterbacked by none other than Nicolas Jaboulet. His recent success with Maison Nicolas Perrin has catapulted him to the forefront of the conversation. In 2012, the dream team was formed when he met the brilliant minds of Marc Sorrel and Alexandre Caso. Domaine Les Alexandrins was born. Using Syrah in soils and exposures more similiar to Hermitage than its sister appellation, the wine showcases a modern interpretation of the often overlooked Crozes-Hermitage. I'd say the rest is history, but with the pedigree involved here, its quite likely they will be making history in the near future!

Domaine Guiberteau, 2017$77Cabernet Franc...Sometimes a forgotten grape, in favor of it's more famous offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon. Well...in the Loire Valley they haven't forgotten. Romain Guiberteau, a flailing law student, decided to return home and reestablish his family's domaine in Saumur. He reclaimed his family's holdings, many on the famous hill of Brézé, and under the tutelage of Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard, he began releasing wines that have quickly become some of the most sought after in the region. This bottling of 100% Cabernet Franc, aged in concrete tanks, truly shows off the purity of the daddy of Cabernets

Piazzo, "Vigna Giaia", 2008$107The story goes that when the Etruscans were chased out of central Italy to the North by the Romans, they eventually hid in the dense forests of Alba. The Romans knew vaguely where they were, but could never capture the fleeting tribe in the thick woods. Giving up the hunt the Romans would eventually name the region after the elusive Etruscans they thought to be barbarians: Barbaresco. The wines have always represented the most approachable form of the complex Nebbiolo grape, with softer tannins than their counterpart, Barolo, to the West. Wines from the region continue to benefit from age and only in the best vintages will they be declared Riserva. This ten year old wine epitomizes the vintage, age-worthiness, and Riserva status completely

Cordero di Montezemolo, "Monfalletto", 2011$148Since 1340, 19 generations have managed the Monfalletto property in the town of La Morra. Even today the property is entirely family run, currently by Giovanni Cordero di Montezemolo and his children. This wine is a carefully selected blend of the Monfalletto estate vineyards, of which the vines age ranges from 15-50 years. The vineyards are all vinified separately, and after ageing in oak barrels of different types and sizes, the final blend is created. Although they do bottle wines from other famous crus in Barolo, this wine is a pure expression of La Morra, and the Monfalletto estate

Castello di Ama, "San Lorenzo", 2014$119Too often Chianti Classico gets associated with the wicker baskets of bulk Chianti, or under-appreciated against the grandness of Brunello di Montalcino. Classico, located in the heart of Tuscany has been regarded as Sangiovese's ideal home since the 13th century. Marco Pallanti began his impressive tenure as winemaker at Castello di Ama in 1982. Despite the region's reputation for poor quality at the time, Pallanti saw the potential in these ancient rolling hills. After apprenticing at Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, he entirely redeveloped the estate vineyards and was among the first to experiment with international grape varieties. One of his most recent accomplishments as President of the Chianti Classico Consorzio was establishing the "Gran Selezione" classification. After all, who's to say there can't be "Grand Cru" Chianti?

Avignonesi, "Grifi", Toscana, 2012$88In 1309, Pope Clement V transferred the papal residence from Rome to Avignon, France. In 1377, when Pope Gregory XI moved the papal residence back to Rome, some noble families of Avignon left France to follow him. It was at that time, in Italy, that one of those families became known as Avignonesi - probably to simplify an otherwise difficult, foreign name. In 1974, the Falvo brothers, owners of the vineyards in the municipality of Cortona, took over the Avignonesi estate and refounded it investing greatly in viniculture, selecting the local varieties and introducing classical ones. Its thanks in large part to Avignonesi that the DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano gained fame in the 1980s. Although they are known for their Vino Nobile's, their "Super Tuscans" are pretty super as well. The "Grifi", which is a blend of Sangiovese from their I Pogetti estate in Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon from their La Selva estate in Cortona, is a stellar example of Tuscan terroir

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Buglioni, "Il Lussurioso", 2013$118The story of Amarone is one of legend, so listen closely... The sweet Recioto wines of the past ruled the Veneto with great power. A wine so lusciously sweet and high in alcohol that it was the only thing needed to satisfy the thirst of the Romans...That is until one day A barrel of Recioto was forgotten and neglected, left to its own devices. The fermentation process continued and, when it was finally found by the wine maker, it turned out to be a dry wine that was powerful, elegant and untamed. Amarone, the new king of the north!

Conde de San Cristóbal, 2015$73Watch out Rioja, Ribera del Duero has been creeping up as one of Spain's premier red wine producing regions. Here, producers are crafting wines from the local Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), as well as small amounts of French varietals. Conde de San Cristóbal is the "sister bodega" of Marqués de Vargas in Rioja. They practice sustainable farming (no herbicides/ pesticides), allow for indigenous yeast fermentation and the wines are bottled with no fining or filtering, resulting in an unprocessed and fully natural wine. These wines are able to combine power and concentration of fruit with the elegance and terroir of an Old World wine

Luca, "Old Vine", Mendoza, 2015$84There is no name more synonymous with Argentinean wine than that of the Catena family. Luca was founded in 1999 by Dr. Laura Catena, a fourth generation vintner, who joined her father's winery in 1995 after graduating magna cum laude from Harvard and earning her M.D. from Stanford. She shortly after, founded the Catena Institute of Wine, with the goal of carrying on her father, Nicolás' vision to put Argentine Malbec on the same level as the best wines in the world. Luca, named after her eldest son, was created in order to show off the greatness of Argentinean wines from rigorously farmed, high altitude, low yield vineyards. This Malbec is sourced from vineyard sites with an average vine age of over 50 years!

Château Pajzos, "5 Puttonyos", 2006$98Tokaji: A dessert wine so nuanced and impressive that Catherine the Great set up a garrison in the town of Tokaj to protect its delivery. Emperor Franz Josef sent Queen Victoria bottles religiously for her birthday. Louis XV referred to it as the "Wine of Kings". Beethoven, Peter the Great, and Thomas Jefferson preferred it to all other sweet wines. Don't you want to join this company of characters?

Pipeworks, "Lizard King", 16oz$12After meeting each other while working at West Lakeview Liquors, Gerrit Lewis and Beejay Olson decided it was time to open a brewery of their own. After an inspirational trip to Belgium and a successful Kickstarter, Pipeworks Brewing Co. was born. The brewery opened in late January 2012 and began brewing extremely unique, small batch beers. They quickly gained a cult following in Chicago that first year. So much so that in January 2013, RateBeer named them "Best New Brewery in the World", and they haven't looked back since. "Lizard King" is an American Pale Ale made with Mosaic hops

Gaja, "Costa Russi", 2009$1954Angelo Gaja is the man credited for catapulting the region of Piedmont into the spotlight. His influence has changed the way the world views Italian wine to this day. A master of Nebbiolo--the austere, tannic grape once considered only quaffable after decades of bottle age, Angelo saw its potential as a world class wine. Despite pushback from his peers, he employed new (and what most considered outlandish) practices both in the vineyard and the winery to promote freshness and elegance in his wine. The story of Gaja is a truly fascinating one, but is best told through a glass of his stunning Barbaresco...(hint, hint)

Featured Dessert Wine
-
Tokaji Aszú, Château Pajzos, "5 Puttonyos", 2006$98Tokaji: A dessert wine so nuanced and impressive that Catherine the Great set up a garrison in the town of Tokaj to protect its delivery. Emperor Franz Josef sent Queen Victoria bottles religiously for her birthday. Louis XV referred to it as the "Wine of Kings." Beethoven, Peter the Great, and Thomas Jefferson preferred it to all other sweet wines. Don't you want to join this company of characters?
