What started as an exciting find quickly turned into one of the more uncomfortable dining experiences of my trip. When we arrived, the owner made it immediately clear we weren't welcome — not because the restaurant was full, but seemingly because we were foreigners. Even after I explained I could communicate in Japanese, he continued to insist we didn't belong there. We were eventually seated, but only begrudgingly. Once inside, we were rushed to order drinks before we'd even had a moment to look at the menu — a pace I doubt would have been reasonable for any guest, regardless of language. By this point in the evening (before 8pm), a significant number of dishes were already sold out. The experience wasn't entirely negative. One of the older waitresses was kind and patient, and a staff member who spoke English came out to assist us — he was genuinely polite and helpful, and I'm grateful he was there. Beppu has been one of the warmest, most welcoming cities I've visited in Japan, which made this experience feel especially out of place. If you're visiting and are drawn in by the high ratings, I'd encourage you to look elsewhere. The food may well be good, but no meal is worth feeling unwelcome in the door. It is actually -2, or 0; unfortunately lowest score google allows to give is 1. The owner is poor mannered, reception impolite; it refuses to make reservation for future date.
