Coming from California, I stumbled upon this place by pure luck, and I found a culinary treasure in Ginza! The Tokyo diner in Ginza, a true gem indeed. Warning: it's not fancy/glamorous and it's not hyped. It's the most ordinary, the authentic, the unwatered down diner with great food and amazing prices in Japan. But the most heartwarming part for me was the chef, the server, and even the customers. This is Japan dining in the purest form, as I remember it from 20 years ago, as well as 40 years ago, when I visited Ginza each time. Since I spoke English only, the chef himself actually came to take the order. He suggested the meals for each one of us. I don't know how he did it, but everything was delicious, starting with corn soup and the salad. "Omu rice" or omelette rice was perfectly prepared. The curry was the best in the world. And the pork cutlets or "donkutsu" was heavenly, and later I found out that this was where it all began or it was first served. Donkutsu began here! The history says there would be no donkutsu without Rengatei! We sat next to the salarymen gathering, which was also a sight in itself considering that this is the Japan's working culture. They actually quieted down as soon as I sat down! Talk about courtesy and consideration, which is rare elsewhere in the world. When I was paying the bill, I asked if I could take candy from a bowl for myself, and the lady grabbed a handful and put them on my palm. That's a rare generosity, even in Japan. Would I go eat here again when I return to Japan? Yes, definitely, this would be the first place in Tokyo to come as soon as I land next time. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
