Renon Foods, is a tiny restaurant on Galle Road sitting in between New Banana Leaf restaurant and the entrance to St. Kilda’s Lane. They are open for breakfast and lunch. Being primarily a rice and curry restaurant makes lunchtime their busiest period. The establishment to the left of Renon Foods is a less successful restaurant called Redmunds owned by the same party, and serves mediocre fried rice dishes. But the food at Renon Foods is really good.I’ve eaten at Renon Foods many times as my workplace is close by. Usually there is a queue here and there is no table service. Dining-in or taking-away, everyone joins this single cue. The queue is serviced very quickly. At lunchtime, you order what you want at the counter based on what you see right in front of you. First you state if you are eating-in or taking-away, and based on that, your food is either served on a plate or in a box. Next, choose if you want white rice or red rice and ask them to serve less quantity if you choose so (their normal portion of rice is a bit too much for me). Then comes the best part. You get to choose up to 4 vegetable dishes. They usually have about 8 or 9 vegetable dishes to choose from, and the dishes keep changing daily. I often gets some fantastic choices. Yesterday, I chose Ash-plantain white curry, Gotukola Maellung (Asiatic pennywort salad), Soy-meat curry and Mae Karal (Yard Long Bean) curry. Then, you get to choose either a fish curry, chicken curry, fried fish, an omelette, a boiled egg or a fried sausage. They also serve you a piece papadum on the side.Customers can ask for additional items from the day’s selection and pay a little more for them. I’ve never taken food away from here though 90% of their customers do. I’ve always eaten in. Therefore, I cannot comment on the quality of food and the eating experience when packed and taken away. They can only seat about 8 people at a time and customers are expected to share tables. The best time to eat at Renon Foods is at about 12:30 pm. Any earlier, some dishes may not be ready. Any later and some choice items may be over. Their most crowded hour is from 12:45pm till about 1:45pm. On average I pay about Rs. 180 (approx. US$ 1) for lunch.
