Recently, there seems to be a noticeable increase in the number of recalls for various food items in the US. Voluntary recalls are the result of manufacturers, distributors, or other similar entities recalling products that they deem as worthy of pulling-off shelves due to findings that may result in a public concern for illness or even death because of suspected belief that the product may have become adulterated or misbranded. All recalls are voluntary, but the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), upon determining that there is a company that refuses to recall its products can detain and seize those products which remain in commerce. Some steps following a recall include: interviewing consumers who may have fallen ill or became injured from haven eaten such food product; collecting and analyzing food samples; collecting and verifying information about the suspected food; & contacting state and local health departments. The general public can request FSIS press releases and recall announcements by subscribing to the FSIS email subscription service.
