We sat with a friend at the street tables of Revolt in the late afternoon. It’s a perfect spot to soak in the vibrant street life of Exarchia. The staff were also incredibly warm and welcoming. Price per person: €5–10 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

We liked this bar so much in Athens that we came back three nights in a row. The atmosphere was relaxed, the cocktails were great, and the curly-haired bartender made us feel genuinely welcome — a big reason we kept returning. The bartender in camo was also fantastic and very accommodating. Unfortunately, our final visit changed things. While quietly having drinks and playing cards, the owner abruptly told us it wasn’t allowed and insisted we stop, saying we could leave if we didn’t like it. It felt unnecessary and unwelcoming, especially after being regulars for several nights. A disappointing end to what had been a great experience.

I visited Revolt Street Bar around 1 pm and ordered a beer. The first thing the waitress said to me was, “So you’re the kind of people that drink beer.” I was genuinely shocked by such an unnecessary, passive-aggressive remark. Let me be clear: I’m not a disrespectful tourist. I didn’t come to Greece just to check off landmarks or take photos, I came to understand and experience the real culture, beyond the surface. I chose Exarcheia precisely because I admire its social history and independent spirit. But what I encountered here wasn’t countercultural edge, it was just plain rudeness. For a country where tourism is one of the main sources of income, treating a respectful visitor with sarcasm for ordering a beer in a bar is not only unwelcoming, it’s a missed opportunity to share the very culture I came to engage with. There are many places in Exarcheia where people are kind and open. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. I won’t be coming back. Price per person: €5–10 Food: 4 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2

Are you sure you were at our place? The drink culture if the whole region and its bars is definitely beer oriented! We hope it was just a misunderstanding. You are more than welcome back to solve it...over beers!
